Giglio Boys

This weekend brings us the annual Dance of the Giglio in East Harlem. The Times ran a short article about it today, in fact. It's always fun and fascinating to watch. Here's a picture Mark took of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Shrine that sponsors the event:

The exterior is deceiving. Click below to see the detail of the ceiling inside:

And here's the Giglio:

Giglio

Taller than a 5 story building. And I kid you not when I tell you that about 8,000 huge Italian men carry that thing an entire Avenue and back. All for FREE!

If you come check out the Fest this weekend, stop by Morrone Bakery on 116th Street. Rosa (the proprietress) is so old school Italian I can't believe she wasn't mentioned in the Times article. (Though she's been closed for vacation so they probably couldn't reach her for comment.) Not that they could understand her if they did. All I hear is, "Scumbadee bumbadee, you look-ah fat, why-ah you baby cryeen, blahbadity bloobadee doo dah. Mingya, calzone." But her bread is delicious...
